Whether you're a kid or a teacher, there's nothing better than waking up to discover you've been given the gift of a day...NO SCHOOL...a snow day! The "happy dance" is the same!!
It's not that kids don't like school (well, maybe some don't...but there's a lot of fun ways teachers can teach, so that shouldn't happen)...nor is it that teachers don't like their job (again, maybe some don't, but if that's the case, they need to be moving on)!
What it is instead is the celebration of being given the gift of time and no expectations! A free day to use as you please! And, as my own children are experiencing right now, a lot of neat new fun stuff to play with! A chance, if taken, to get out of the couch-potato-mode and dive into a whole world outdoors/ in your imagination. A chance to celebrate with nature all the beauty and fun that surrounds you. Who knows, you might even catch sight of some wildlife on the move!
Later, yes, there will be the black mega-piles in the parking lots, the windows to be scraped, and the curbside slush that's less than attractive...but all those elements are there because of the man-made structures of cars, roads, and traffic. It's here and now, in the freshness of the new fallen snow, that the beauty of nature (and of the snow day) is truly illuminated!
I think Richard Louv, author of the book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder would approve.
